Introduction: More Than a Corporate Strategy
Acquisitions are often viewed as the domain of large corporations but in reality, they can be a transformative strategy for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) too. In today’s fast-evolving business environment, SMEs face unique challenges: rapid technological change, growing customer expectations, and the pressure to scale efficiently. Strategic acquisitions offer a powerful solution – enabling SMEs to access new markets, accelerate innovation, and build long-term resilience.
At Agronomix Software, I experienced this journey firsthand during our acquisition by Cultura Technologies in 2022. Having worked for the company since 2008 and been deeply involved in the transition, I saw the full emotional and strategic scope of what it means for an SME to join a larger organization. Done right, acquisitions don’t dilute an SME’s identity: they amplify it.
Why Acquisitions Matter for SME Growth
For SMEs, acquisitions are more than expansion, they’re a strategic move to future-proof the business. While organic growth is possible, it’s often slow and resource-intensive. Acquisitions enable SMEs to:
- Scale Faster: By acquiring or being acquired, SMEs can immediately gain access to operational capacity, talent, and customer bases they would otherwise take years to build.
- Enter New Markets: A well-placed acquisition can provide an SME with a foothold in geographic or sector-specific markets.
- Enhance Capabilities: SMEs can acquire complementary technologies or expertise to fill gaps in their offering and stay competitive.

This was true for Agronomix. As a niche software provider serving the plant breeding industry, we had a strong reputation but limited reach. Joining Cultura expanded our opportunities significantly: bringing shared platforms, centralised resources, and a network of like-minded AgTech companies to collaborate with.
Lessons from the Agronomix Acquisition
Acquisition brought with it not only practical benefits, but also emotional challenges, particularly for a company like Agronomix, which had been privately owned for 32 years. For me, the experience was deeply personal. Though I wasn’t an owner, I had long been a key stakeholder in company operations, staff development, and strategic planning.
Navigating the acquisition meant balancing the wellbeing of our team with the future vision of the business. Cultura’s values aligned well with ours. They weren’t simply interested in a financial transaction, but in fostering innovation, retaining expertise, and helping us grow within a supportive, industry-focused ecosystem.
That alignment was crucial. In the wrong hands, acquisitions can stifle creativity and fracture teams. But with the right partner, they can secure a company’s legacy while opening the door to incredible new opportunities.
ExtendAg & BasicPro: Another Example of Strategic Fit

Another great example within the Cultura family is ExtendAg’s recent acquisition of BasicPro, a company with deep roots in potato grading and certification. As General Manager John Roos shared with me:
We had integrated with BasicPro before and understood their strengths. This acquisition strengthens our capabilities in grading automation especially around inbound plant activities associated with analyzing grading attributes and the certification of raw product. It’s a natural extension of our ecosystem and aligns with our mission to enhance field-to-processor operations.
This is exactly what strategic acquisition should look like: building on existing partnerships, expanding capabilities, and improving the customer experience. It also reinforces that even highly specialised industries—like agriculture—can benefit immensely from well-aligned mergers.

Conclusion: Acquisitions Can Empower, Not Erase
Acquisitions don’t have to mean losing control or compromising values. When led with transparency, purpose, and a clear strategic fit, they can help SMEs do more of what they do best with the resources, and reach, to amplify their impact.
If you’re an SME owner or leader, don’t dismiss acquisition as something “only for big players.” In the right context, it could be the key to unlocking your company’s next chapter…just as it was for us.
