What inspired you to pursue a career in the plant breeding industry?
I grew up in Cuba, but agriculture wasn’t something I initially thought about. My husband suggested I explore the field of agriculture, seeing its untapped potential and fewer competitors. Once I began working in plant breeding, I quickly fell in love with it and knew I wouldn’t want to do anything else. Genetics, in particular, was my favorite subject at university. I understood it deeply and truly enjoyed it. Since then, everything I’ve done, whether writing, research, or marketing studies, has been intimately connected to plant breeding. It became a passion that continues to grow every day.
“Diversity in breeding is the foundation of innovation. By bringing together different perspectives, experiences, and ideas, we can tackle agriculture’s biggest challenges and unlock its greatest opportunities. Embracing diversity isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s essential for the future of our industry.”

What trends do you see shaping the future of plant breeding?
The future of plant breeding is being shaped by several transformative trends. The integration of genomics and artificial intelligence is paving the way for precision breeding, enabling breeders to develop crops with enhanced traits more efficiently. As the world faces growing environmental challenges, there is a heightened focus on developing climate-resilient crops that can thrive in diverse and changing conditions. Sustainable practices and resource efficiency are becoming central to breeding strategies, reflecting a global push for environmentally responsible agriculture. Additionally, the rise of open-access data sharing is fostering collaboration and innovation across the industry, breaking down barriers and accelerating advancements.
What challenges in plant breeding excite you the most?
Developing climate-resilient crops is both a challenge and a passion. Finding ways to address food security while improving efficiency and sustainability is incredibly motivating. I’m also intrigued by integrating new technologies to revolutionize breeding programs.
